With a 6-0 win over their fellow charter SFL members the Fort Lauderdale Barracudas, the Daytona Beach Racers F.C. (also curiously known as the Port St. Lucie Racers despite never playing there, and oddly having their only "home" game of 2012 in Fort Pierce) have clinched the 2012 Stars Football League regular season title.
Whether or not they'll be crowned SFL champions, on the other hand, is still up in the air.
With the win, the Racers move to 2-1 (.667) in the SFL standings. There is one remaining game on the schedule, a matchup between the Barracudas and the Fort Myers Swampdogs, in Fort Lauderdale on July 14. A Fort Myers win would tie the Racers atop the standings at 2-1; however, the Racers, in their lone game against Fort Myers, won that game 16-9, giving them the head-to-head advantage. If Fort Lauderdale wins, both they and Fort Myers will have two losses on the season compared to the Racers' one. In either case, neither of the other two teams can catch or surpass Daytona Beach in the standings.
The SFL schedule has listed a July 21 date for an SFL Championship Game but has so far issued no details. Whether or not the league follows through on its plans for the game will determine whether or not the week 5 game has any meaning. If the championship game is still on, week 5 becomes a de facto playoff match: the winner moves on to face Daytona in the championship. If not, the matchup is merely an exhibition (or, as the United Football League has called it, a "consolation game") and Daytona has already won the title.
Daytona finished in second place in the 2011 season; a scheduling quirk prevented them from facing the first-place New Orleans Jazz F.C., who played only two games compared to the Racers' four.
