So apparently the UFL drew a laughable 601 fans to its contest Wednesday night where the Las Vegas Locomotives handily defeated the Omaha Nighthawks. I think there were SFL games that have drawn more fans (the New Orleans Jazz drew 500 to 700), and the UFL obviously has a much bigger budget (even if they don't pay the piper in the end).
So now that we're in the unusual situation of seeing the tiny SFL in better position than the UFL (the next biggest pro football league in America outside the NFL itself), how much longer do you think the UFL has? Will the UFL's inevitable collapse have any impact on the SFL? Of course, you have the SPFL and the New USFL lurking in the wings as well.

It's a bit unfair to compare the very best of the SFL (did I really say that? ) with the worst of the UFL, but I know what you mean. I can't help but think there is a reason this season is being played out that we don't know yet. It makes no sense to run the season this way unless they think there's a way they can eventually make some money. Who knows? If the UFL dropped dead, I don't think it would affect the SFL at all. They seem to operate in their own little world. If there was another spring league out there, that might make a difference.

Will we ever have a viable alternative football league in the US in our lifetimes? Ever?

Will we ever have a viable alternative football league in the US in our lifetimes? Ever? If we do, it won't be one resembling what we think it is. Arena football-- the original league-- had a pretty nice, long run by staying cheap: ironman football, fewer players on the field, some gimmicks, etc. By the way, the other shoe dropped this afternoon. The rest of the season is canceled; they say they want to "resume" the season in the spring, but I don't really think anyone believes that. espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/8528023/cash-strapped-ufl-suspending-play-spring

I saw that. the UFL cancels the remainder of its season. Again. The UFL has "died" so many times it got to be a joke. Unfortunately this time it seems permanent. I just really want to root for an alternative outdoor league. And right now all we're left with is Petey's SFL. Well, maybe this board will pep back up a little. Folks are running out of places to go to talk alt football.....

so are they officially done? Imagine what could of happened if salaries were all like 10k and not 30k

so are they officially done? Imagine what could of happened if salaries were all like 10k and not 30k They would have got even less press (if that's possible) and they would have died more quietly. From start to finish, the whole thing was a mess!

so are they officially done? Imagine what could of happened if salaries were all like 10k and not 30k Maybe not officially done, but I'd venture to guess they're effectively done now. With what amounts to almost the entirety of two teams' rosters suing the league, it would have to take a serious step back in talent to pull off a season now. It now has a reputation as a deadbeat league, and just like the WFL of old, once that happens, you are toast. We're at spring now, and there is no season, or even an announcement of one. As far as salaries go, remember, this is professional football, and although 10K is not exactly chump change for two months' work, grocery store clerks make more in a year than that. Arena ball is currently about 15K. You are pushing dangerously close to semi-pro at that salary. Alas, that is the challenge with professional football, and why it has failed outside the NFL: you have to pay quite a bit to fill the large rosters entirely with professional players, more than can be raised from tickets. The only reason the NFL works is because it is bankrolled by all the major networks.
